The browser landscape is constantly evolving. Most library users are familiar with Internet Explorer (IE) and its newer relative Microsoft Edge. Both of those Microsoft browsers still lag behind Chrome and Firefox in the general marketplace.
But what about browser choice on VDOT-issued computers and laptops?
For years VDOT required use of Internet Explorer (IE) 11, which is today a very dated browser. VDOT is in the process of moving away from any applications that require the use of IE 11. As of June 2021 VDOT announced Microsoft Edge Chromium would replace Edge Legacy on the path to migrating VDOT employees away from Internet Explorer 11.
Microsoft Edge Chromium is built on the same underlying technology as Google Chrome, offering better compatibility and performance for websites and extensions and a more Chrome-like user experience. While IE 11 is no longer supported by most websites and has been causing some users in the Commonwealth to receive warning messages when visiting those sites, it has yet to be removed from VDOT devices.
VDOT devices can still run Google Chrome, however, VDOT employees can no longer request installation of Firefox.
Most library resources and research systems (including the library catalog, subscription databases, research guides and the library Web site) all work from either Chrome or Edge.
Based on our most current experiences we recommend VDOT patrons using VDOT issued devices use the Microsoft Edge browser.
Since all library resources (collections and services) are available 24/7/365 from any connected device (including patrons' home PC or other personal devices), VDOT employees working from personal devices can use any browser they prefer without having to wonder what browser features are enabled or disabled.
VDOT employees using personal devices have a similar high-quality experience conducting library research when using current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Recap: From your VDOT device, we recommend using Microsoft Edge. From a personal device, VDOT employees can use any modern browser.
