Subscription databases and apps used at VDOT are increasingly becoming accessible through a form of authentication called "Single Sign On" (SSO), which helps authorized VDOT users access online resources more securely with fewer usernames/passwords.

VDOT employees who log into their VDOT computer must "sign on" with their network username and password, right?

Once that is done (in a perfect world) you should not need to enter your credentials again when you go to use an online resource. Instead, you should be automatically recognized as an authorized user and welcomed back based on your first, or "single" sign on. At least, that's the idea.

To accomplish this feat VDOT uses the Okta identity management system. Okta can link VDOT apps, logins and devices so that regardless of where you are or what device you are using, as an authorized VDOT employee you can connect securely to resources without all the extra usernames and passwords.

Okta works with major apps and Web sites, including: Microsoft Office 365, the VDOT Virtual Campus and MyCareerConnect, to name a few, with more on the way. Not all online databases or enterprise apps used by VDOT employees can be accessed with Okta, but this handy VDOT Okta Dashboard shows you what apps work with Okta right now.

How the VDOT Research Library is using Okta/SSO:

  • At this time three VDOT subscription databases utilize Okta/SSO: Skillsoft Books, ASTM Compass, and Knovel.
  • Most other library databases can still be accessed remotely (i.e. from devices off the VDOT network), but to do that you'll need to use your your Virtual Library Card (VLC). Check out this Quick Start Guide to the VLC.
  • We hope to make more library subscriptions available through SSO in 2024.
